Drying

Drying timber correctly is both a science and an art. Incorrectly dried timber can make the difference between an heirloom item and a second grade product.

All green timber purchased is dried in our gas assisted solar kilns. Drying is an exact process and without accurate control the quality of the end product can be compromised. We aim for high quality always.

All our timber is finished between the Australian Standards requirements of 9% to 14% moisture content.

Different species of timber may be treated differently in the drying process as they do not all dry at the same rate. Marri benefits from air drying for several months before entering the kilns. This sort of pre-drying conditioning needs to be factored into the turn around time for these products. Thinner sections are quicker to dry, for example 25mm Jarrah takes an average of six to eight weeks to dry, while 50mm Jarrah takes four to five months, depending on the time of year.

We do not offer contract drying service as our six kilns always run at full capacity and space is not available. For people in Western Australia who have timber they want dried we recommend contacting Forest Products Commission, Harvey, Western Australia, as they keep a list of businesses who do offer this service.

Machining

Machining of the final products are overseen to ensure the finished product conforms to all specifications.

Once the dry timber has left the kilns it is processed to customer requirements. Much of it is skip dressed and graded then sent to wholesalers in Western Australia and Australia wide.

25mm Jarrah is run into Tongue & Groove, End-Matched flooring which is packed in Random Length packs and sent to one of our distributors. Other thin flooring is machined into either a 10mm or 12mm Tongue & Groove direct stick product, the majority of which is forwarded to our Perth distributors.

We offer a contract machining service for quantities in excess of 1 cubic metre. Smaller quantities may be scheduled, however these usually incur a machine set-up charge.
